Air Algerie suspends flights to Lebanon amid rising tensions

Aug 02, 2024

Algiers [Algeria], August 2: Algeria's state-owned carrier Air Algerie announced Thursday the cancellation of its flights to Lebanon amid rising tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.
The carrier did not specify the reasons for the decision, stating it is "temporary until further notice."
Several international carriers have also announced the cancellation of their flights to and from the Lebanese capital of Beirut, citing "an abundance of caution."
Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas' attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.
Confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel rose recently after the latter accused Hezbollah of attacking a football stadium in the town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights, killing a dozen people. Israel retaliated by launching three missiles on Tuesday evening near the Shura Council of Hezbollah in Dahieh in Beirut's southern suburbs, killing Fouad Shokor, Hezbollah's top military commander, and seven civilians.
Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah threatened a definite and painful response to the Israeli attack at the appropriate time and place.
