'Around 300 North Koreans have died fighting in Ukraine'

Jan 14, 2025

Seoul [South Korea], January 14: South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) says around 300 North Korean soldiers are thought to have died so far in their fight alongside Russian forces against Ukraine.
Another 2,700 North Korean soldiers have also been wounded, Lee Seong Kweun, a member of parliament said on Monday, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency. Lee had previously taken part in a non-public parliamentary hearing with representatives of the NIS.
The agency is said to have reported that the intelligence service attributes the high losses of North Korean troops to their "lack of understanding of modern warfare."
The NIS also claimed that North Korean soldiers are being urged by Russia to commit suicide rather than allow themselves to be taken prisoner by Ukraine.
Over the weekend Ukraine said it had captured two North Korean soldiers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy expects there will be more prisoners from the East Asian country. "It's only a matter of time before our troops manage to capture others," he wrote on X.(DPA)
