Oct 14, 2024

Nevada [US], October 14: A man arrested at a security checkpoint near former US President Donald Trump's campaign rally in California on October 12 is now facing gun charges after being found in possession of two guns and a magazine.
The 49-year-old man, a resident of Las Vegas (Nevada), was stopped and arrested by Riverside County Sheriff's Office officers while driving a black SUV, according to Reuters.
"The incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or those attending the event," the sheriff's office said.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said "we may have stopped another assassination attempt," according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise . However, at a later press conference, Bianco said he "didn't remember saying anything like that."
Trump survived an assassination attempt in July, when a gunman's bullet grazed his ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman was shot dead by Secret Service agents.
In September, another man was charged with trying to assassinate Mr Trump, after Secret Service agents found him hiding with a rifle near the former president's golf course in Florida.
Trump's campaign rally on October 12 took place in the Coachella Valley, an area famous for its annual music and arts festival.
The sheriff's office said the man arrested, identified as Vem Miller, was charged with possession of a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine. Further details about the charges were not immediately available.
Jail records show he was released on $5,000 bail on October 13.
In another development, Trump on October 13 pledged to hire 10,000 more border patrol agents if he is elected president, as the Republican candidate intensified his attacks on his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
He said he would achieve this goal by asking Congress to approve a 10 percent pay raise for border patrol agents, along with a $10,000 signing and retention bonus.
The pledge came at a campaign rally in the border state of Arizona, one of the battleground states in the election.
The US currently has about 20,000 border patrol agents.
Harris outlined plans to fix "our broken immigration system" while accusing Mr Trump of "fanning the flames of fear and division" about the impact of immigrants on American life.
