International Criminal Court prosecutor under investigation

Nov 12, 2024

Hague [Netherlands], November 12: ICC National Council of State Parties chair Paivi Kaukoranta said an external investigation into Mr Khan was needed to ensure an independent and fair process.
According to AFP on November 11, Mr. Khan was accused of sexual misconduct with a staff member in his office. He denied the accusation. The prosecutor added: "This is a time when I and the ICC have been subjected to repeated attacks and threats," emphasizing the independence of the ICC and warning that those who make threats could face legal trouble.
Mr Karim Khan welcomed the investigation and stressed that he would participate in the process. "I will continue all other work as prosecutor, in accordance with my duties," he said.
The alleged victim is a female lawyer in her 30s. The Guardian, citing several sources familiar with the matter, said Mr Karim Khan's office has around 450 staff and there is growing discontent with the ICC prosecutor's handling of cases. The sources added that some senior staff advised Mr Khan to take leave until the investigation is completed.
ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan made headlines in May when he asked the court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and three senior Hamas officials. The ICC has yet to decide whether to issue arrest warrants. Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden have condemned Khan's request for the arrest warrant.
The International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, investigates and prosecutes cases of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.
