Japan's prime minister forced his son to quit his job as a personal secretary

May 30, 2023

Tokyo [Japan], May 30: Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said his son will quit his job as a personal secretary from June 1, due to inappropriate behavior at the prime minister's residence.
NHK reported on May 29 that Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has announced that his eldest son KishidaShotaro (32 years old) will quit his job as his personal secretary, after hosting a party at his official residence last year.
Speaking to the press, Prime Minister Kishida said his son will resign from June 1 and be replaced by secretary Yamamoto Takayoshi, who used to hold this position until October 2022.
His son was severely warned by him after being criticized for holding a party at the prime minister's residence. Last week, a magazine reported that Shotaro held a year-end party with his relatives in December 2022.
Attendees posed for photos in a room normally used to receive foreign dignitaries. They even held a fake press conference there.
Prime Minister Kishida explained that his son's behavior at the prime minister's residence was inappropriate, adding that Shotaro was also a public figure as his secretary.
The leader added that he made the announcement after completing most of the coordination related to the G7 summit , which will take place from May 19 to May 21 in Japan.
He said he took the matter seriously because he was responsible for appointing his son to the position of secretary. "Of course, the responsibility of the appointment lies with me. I want to fulfill my duty by considering the challenges that cannot be postponed and determined to move forward," Kyodo news agency quoted him as saying.
Opposition parties had previously called on Mr. Kishida to dismiss his son, arguing that the prime minister was not allowed to appoint a son, and that Mr. Shotaro was not suitable for the position.
