Man accused of hoax gunman report in Prague

Dec 21, 2024

Prague (Czech Republic), December 21: Czech police announced Friday that a man has been accused of scaremongering after falsely reporting the presence of a gunman in central Prague on Thursday.
"The man made it all up and confessed during questioning. Detectives charged him with the crime of spreading a false alarm, which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison," police said on the social media platform X.
Around noon on Thursday, police began investigating a report of a gunman allegedly moving from Letna Park towards Prague's city center. Dozens of officers were deployed, and precautionary measures were implemented near Charles University's Faculty of Law and Faculty of Arts buildings.
Approximately 30 minutes later, police concluded the security operation, confirming the report was fabricated.
The false alarm comes just ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Charles University shooting tragedy. On Dec. 21 last year, a gunman killed 14 people at the university's Faculty of Arts building in central Prague before committing suicide. An additional 25 people were injured in the attack.
