Manager Renato Portaluppi leaves Gremio

Apr 16, 2021

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) Apr 16: Gremio have parted ways with head coach Renato Portaluppi by mutual consent, the Brazilian SerieA club said on Thursday.
In a statement on their official website, Gremio said assistant coaches Alexandre Mendes and Victor Signorelli had also left the club.
"Gremio thanks [Portaluppi] for his dedication ... important achievements [and] loyalty," the statement read.
The announcement came less than a day after Gremio suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Ecuador's Independientedel Valle, a result that eliminated the Porto Alegre side from the Copa Libertadores in the final qualifying stage.
A former forward for Roma and Brazil's national team, Portaluppi was until Thursday the longest serving manager in the Brazilian Serie A, having taken charge of Gremio for a third time in September 2016.
He was also the club's first team manager from 2010 to 2011 and in 2013.
In his latest spell, Portaluppi guided Gremio to seven titles: a Copa Libertadores, a Copa do Brasil, a RecopaSudamericana, three Rio Grande do Sul state championships and a RecopaGaucha.
The 58-year-old is currently self-isolating after contracting COVID-19.
He will be replaced on an interim basis by Gremio's U21 coach Thiago Gomes.
