Mr. Trump 'bet' with female journalist about defamation lawsuit

Mar 09, 2024

New York [US], March 9: Former US President Donald Trump on March 8 (US time) paid a bond worth 91.6 million USD (2,258 billion VND) to appeal the defamation verdict, in which he had to pay 83,000 USD in compensation. 3 million USD to journalist E. Jean Carroll, Reuters reported.
The amount of 91.6 million USD is in accordance with legal regulations in New York state. Accordingly, in case he wants to appeal, he must pay an amount equivalent to 110% of the compensation.
The appeal was filed just 3 days before the deadline for Mr. Trump to pay damages to Ms. Carroll for defaming her in 2019. At that time, he used many strong words to deny the accusation. accused that he sexually assaulted her in the dressing room of a store in Manhattan (New York state) in the mid-1990s.
In case of a successful appeal, Mr. Trump will receive all 91.6 million USD back.
In response to the above developments, Ms. Carroll on March 8 called the bond size "excellent" and said that she would quickly "consolidate" Mr. Trump's assets if he did not pay compensation before the deadline.
The fact that Mr. Trump had to pay the above bond took place in the context that federal judge Lewis Kaplan, who was in charge of the case, on March 7 denied the former US President's request to delay payment to the female journalist.
This bond is issued by Federal Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Chubb Insurance Company, headquartered in the state of Virginia.
Court records do not reveal how much Mr. Trump paid or how much property he mortgaged to obtain the bond.
Judge Kaplan gave Ms. Carroll's lawyers until the morning of March 11 to raise any objections to Mr. Trump's legal action. If there is a disagreement, her lawyer and Mr. Trump's will argue before this judge the same afternoon.
