Palestinians in Gaza frustrated, disheartened by total collapse: UN official

Nov 30, 2024

New York [US], November 30: A senior international official has emphasised the urgent need for substantial humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling on Israeli authorities to facilitate its delivery, noting that Palestinians are increasingly frustrated and disheartened by the collapse of public systems and safety across the Gaza Strip.
Ajith Sunghay, Head of Office of the United Nations Human Rights (OHCHR) in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stated in a video briefing to journalists in New York that securing basic survival needs has become a harrowing daily struggle for Gaza's residents.
Reflecting on his recent week-long visit to Gaza, Sunghay expressed profound concern over widespread hunger. He described the worsening destruction and recounted seeing women and children scavenging through massive rubbish dumps in search of food.
The official also highlighted his discussions with young men and women in Gaza who conveyed feelings of despair and a strong desire to leave the region.
He noted that they face a complete breakdown of their society, including its educational system, places of worship, and local support networks, leaving them devoid of security, hope, or a future in Gaza.
Sunghay warned that the situation in Gaza City is dire, particularly with relentless bombardments continuing across the Strip. He underscored the urgent need for adequate shelters and winter clothing as thousands of recently displaced individuals, especially from Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, are living in partially destroyed buildings or temporary camps under inhumane conditions, compounded by severe food shortages and appalling sanitary conditions.
The official further cautioned against the ongoing heavy bombardments in areas surrounding Gaza City and the forced displacement from northern Gaza to its central and southern regions. He called for an immediate end to the devastation and suffering endured by the Palestinian people in Gaza.
