Poland bans Ukrainian grain import
Apr 16, 2023
Warsaw [Poland], April 16: Poland has banned the import of grain and other food from Ukraine after farmers said their livelihoods were threatened by the duty-free movement of large quantities of Ukrainian grain made possible by the European Union.
According to the PA news agency, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of Poland's ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), announced a conference in the northeastern town of Lyse on Saturday.
"We are and will remain, without the slightest change, friends and allies of Ukraine," the leader said. Nevertheless, he said, the government must protect the interests of its citizens.
Poland is one of Ukraine's staunchest political and military supporters, especially following the invasion by Russia. But protests from farmers in the EU state led to HenrykKowalczyk resigning as Poland's minister of agriculture and being replaced by Robert Telus. (dpa)
