Quad leaders meet in US to discuss maritime security

Washington [US], September 22: Biden and Albanese "discussed their respective foreign policies toward China and their shared concerns about China's coercive and destabilizing activities," according to AFP, citing a statement from the White House .
Biden will also welcome Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at his home on September 21 (US time). After that, Biden will host the Quad summit ( including the US, Australia, Japan and India) at his old high school in Claymont.
"This is President Biden's first time hosting foreign leaders in Wilmington as president, reflecting his deep personal relationships with each of the Quad leaders," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. This will also be the last Quad summit of Biden's presidency after he withdraws from the 2024 presidential election.
Reuters quoted several US officials as saying that at this Quad summit, leaders will talk about the tense situation in the East Sea, enhancing security cooperation and addressing illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific waters .
The summit's joint statement is expected to include stronger language than previous meetings on the South China Sea and "threats" from North Korea, officials added.
