Republican Party has a black presidential candidate

May 20, 2023

Washington [US], May 20: Senator Tim Scott, the only black Republican in the US Senate, entered the 2024 presidential race on May 19.
Reuters cited records sent to US election authorities on May 19, saying that Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has entered the 2024 presidential race.
The son of an impoverished single mother and the only black Republican in the Senate, Scott often uses his story as proof that America is still the promised land.
During the campaign, Mr. Scott's cheerful personality stood in sharp contrast to other candidates such as former President Donald Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida. These people portray America as a declining nation in need of rescue from leftist elites.
Mr. Scott is a rare case in a country where politics is deeply divided by race. About 92% of black voters support President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, while 55% of white voters support Trump.
Senator Scott often criticized Mr. Trump when he was president for making insensitive comments on the issue of race. Mr. Scott also accused Democrats of exploiting racial tensions for their own gain.
Despite calling himself a victim of racial prejudice, Mr. Scott has repeatedly asserted that the US is not a racist country.
Only about 2% of Republicans plan to vote for Scott in the primaries, according to the polls, and his popularity across the country remains fairly low. Meanwhile, more than half of Republicans plan to vote for former President Trump and about a fifth support Mr. DeSantis, who is expected to enter the race in the coming days.
