Taiwan leader pledges to maintain the status quo of peace and stability in the strait

Taipei [Taiwan], May 20: Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen vowed on May 20 to maintain the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
According to Reuters, Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing-wen vowed on May 20 to maintain the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait amid China's increasing military pressure on the island.
Taiwan will not be provocative and will not bow to Chinese pressure, Tsai said in a speech at her office in Taipei on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of her rule.
"War is not an option," Tsai said. "Maintaining the status quo of peace and stability is the consensus of both the world and Taiwan ," she stated.
The Taiwanese leader said Taiwan "will stand with communities around the world to reduce risks together".
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said G7 leaders at the Hiroshima summit agreed that they were seeking a peaceful solution to the Taiwan issue .
Tsai said Taiwanese officials were also in discussions with the administration of US President Joe Biden about providing $500 million worth of weapons to the island. According to Ms. Tsai, this aid is intended to solve the delayed delivery of weapons due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tsai also emphasized the importance of Taiwan, which produces most of the world's advanced semiconductor chips, in the global supply chain. Ms. Tsai has pledged to keep the most advanced chip technologies and research and development centers in Taiwan.
Taiwan is preparing for an important leadership election in mid-January 24, and tensions with China are at the forefront of the election agenda.
